Advanced Helicopter Training

KBFS offers several advanced training courses designed to enhance your skills as a professional pilot and make yourself more marketable as a commercial helicopter pilot.

Vertical Reference Training

KBFS helicopters are configured to conduct critical Vertical Reference Training, which is required to pursue a career flying in support of the Forest Service or Department of Interior. The course includes a minimum of 10 hours of Vertical Reference Training and prepares the pilot to successfully complete OAS carding with the Forest Service. Additionally, the student will be trained to conduct various external load operations necessary for employment in several markets, to include building and power line construction.

Turbine Transitions

This course focuses on starting and emergency procedures associated with operation of a turbine engine. Students receive a minimum of 5 hours dual instruction in a Turbine Powered Helicopter and 2 hours of instruction using a simulator for critical starting procedures and simulated emergency procedures.

Crew Resource Management

This course is designed to provide the pilot with a management system which makes optimum use of all available resources—equipment, procedures and people—to promote safety and enhance the efficiency of operations. CRM focuses on interpersonal communication, leadership, and decision making in the cockpit.
